How to Set Your Timeline So You Can Actually Join Cocktail Hour

September 19, 2025 in Top Tips

One of the most common questions we get from our couples is: “Is there any way we can join cocktail hour?” And my answer is always the same: absolutely! With the right timeline planning, you can sip champagne, enjoy those hors d’oeuvres you carefully chose, and mingle with your guests before dinner is served. Here’s how:

1. Do a First Look

This is the biggest game-changer. By seeing each other before the ceremony, you can knock out the majority of your portraits, couple portraits, and wedding party shots. This means that after the ceremony, you’re not rushing through photos while your guests are already enjoying cocktail hour. Instead, you can grab a glass of bubbly and join right in.

2. Take Family Photos Beforehand

Family formals can take more time than most couples realize. If you’re able to schedule them before the ceremony (or at least some of them), you’ll save yourself 20–30 minutes later. Think through who you really want in those posed family photos, make a list, and share it with your photographer and planner ahead of time so the process is quick and seamless.

3. Keep Your Ceremony Short & Sweet

Your ceremony should be meaningful, but it doesn’t need to be long. Most ceremonies last anywhere from 20–30 minutes, which is perfect. Anything much longer than that eats into your timeline and makes it harder to enjoy that post-ceremony window with guests. Work with your officiant to keep the pacing intentional but concise.

4. Build in a Buffer

Wedding days rarely run on an exact schedule, hair and makeup can take longer, a family member might wander off during photos, or transportation could be delayed. By building in a small buffer of 10–15 minutes before cocktail hour, you’re giving yourself room to breathe. If everything runs on time, amazing! You get extra mingling time. If not, you’re still on track.

5. Communicate Your Priorities

Your planner, photographer, and catering team all need to know that joining cocktail hour is a priority for you. When your vendor team understands your goals, they’ll structure things in a way that makes it possible, whether that’s shortening photo sessions, adjusting ceremony start times, or coordinating transitions behind the scenes.

6. Don’t Forget a Plate of Apps Just in Case

Sometimes, even with the best-laid plans, you may still get pulled into a few extra photos or guest conversations. Ask your planner or catering team to set aside a plate of hors d’oeuvres and a drink for you and your spouse so you don’t miss out completely. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference!

Why It’s Worth It-

Cocktail hour is such a fun part of the day! It’s relaxed, filled with energy, and gives you your first chance to celebrate as a newly married couple with your guests. By planning your timeline intentionally, you’ll avoid spending this hour tucked away taking photos, and instead, you’ll be clinking glasses, sharing hugs, and savoring every bite of the menu you designed. 🥂✨
